D-mannose is a natural simple sugar that is especially popular for recurrent bladder infections. It is barely metabolised, reaches the urine almost unchanged and works there specifically against the most common cause: E. coli bacteria.
How D-mannose works
E. coli attaches to the bladder wall with tiny hairs (fimbriae). D-mannose occupies exactly these docking sites, so the bacteria bind to the sugar instead of the lining – and are simply flushed out the next time you urinate.
Use & dosage
- Typically 2 g of powder dissolved in water, once or several times a day (per the label).
- For prevention, a smaller maintenance dose in the evening is often enough.
- Combine with plenty of fluids to boost the flushing effect.
Caution & when to see a doctor
D-mannose only works against E. coli-related infections, not all pathogens. With fever, flank pain or blood in the urine, and in case of diabetes, seek medical advice before regular use. If symptoms last more than two days or keep coming back, a medical diagnosis is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does D-mannose raise blood sugar? It is barely metabolised; even so, with diabetes it's best to check with your doctor.
